     - 'Habitation' by Margaret Atwood. This one is more modern and has a kind of social commentary about marriage. Very interesting and different take on love.
     - 'The Clod and the Pebble' by William Blake is kind of cynical, looking at the contradictory nature of love.
     - 'Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day' by Shakespeare is kind of ironic and discusses depicting everlasting love in poetry.

   I need to compare and contrast the poems first love by john clare and ballad by anon.I have no idea where to start as i have never studied poetry before. My essay has to be between 200 - 500 words long. If anyone has any advice i would be really grateful.

     First read them carefully. Figure out what you think the author is talking about. No one can tell you you are interpreting the poem wrong. I would start by comparing things like what kind of love is in the poem. Are they both woman/man love, parent to a child love. etc. Compare the way they describe thier beloved (adj. they use) Also, is the love returned to the author , or is it unrequited. Is the author, happy or sad? Make each point and use lots of examples from the poems themselves. You will have 200 words in no time. Start by jotting down things that are obviously different and similar and arrange your paragraphs accordingly.

      A lot of poems, but I'll just give two of them here. Pardon me.

      Written by Lord Byron, this is as real as a Love poem can get. This isn't lovey-dovey and it even applies to these days where impressions are a great part of relationships.

      Oh, talk not to me of a name great in story;
      The days of our youth are the days of our glory;
      And the myrtle and ivy of sweet two-and-twenty
      Are worth all your laurels, though ever so plenty.

      What are garlands and crowns to the brow that is wrinkled?
      'Tis but as a dead flower with May-dew besprinkled:
      Then away with all such from the head that is hoary!
      What care I for the wreaths that can only give glory?

      This poem is a contrast to the above, where Shelley goes into that dreamy stance of Love. But no, I don't like it just because it's inspired (probably) from a woman of my country. If the reader doesn't cringe in love while reading the last stanza, he has no taste in romantic literature for sure.

      Or worse yet . . . they've never been in love.

      Good love poems warms the soul. It reminds us of what it feels like and opens us up to the possibility of seeing love differently.
